On the week when newborn children face cuts to their Child Trust Fund vouchers for the first time, one of the biggest family charities took to the airwaves to press the importance of encouraging child savings.
Michael Connellan of the Family & Parenting Institute went on BBC 24 and Radio 5Liveto counter the myth that Child Trust Funds only help those who would save anyway, explaining that: “the evidence shows that families who haven’t done this before have been encouraged to start.”
He urged that even if the Government doesn’t feel it can afford vouchers, “it is really important that the wider family - parents, aunties, uncles, grandparents - can continue using this service”, where every newborn child has a savings account opened for them which they can access when they are 18.
You can listen to the interview (it’s about 9mins 30secs in) here. And if you feel the same way, why not call or write into your local media to tell them how you and your family have been given the kick-start to save by the Child Trust Fund? Shouldn’t politicians ensure that your children’s baby brothers, sisters, and their friends have the same opportunity too?
